Laura Tobler’s thoughts
The photograph is inspired by a headline from Tagesanzeiger (Swiss-German newspaper), introducing a new trend: Social Freezing (freezing of egg cells [oocytes] for non-medical reasons). If we think of the future as decay, we try to fool it with a freezer. We play with time: slow it down, stretch it. Laura is fascinated by the idea of a huge freezer and curious about how the one in her shared flat currently looks.
The jury’s thoughts
The Jury discussed how we are confronted with images all the time, online and offline. There seems to be a longing for a clear image. Compared to the other submissions, Laura Tobler‘s entry shows a clear association to the question: HOW TO FOOL THE FUTURE? The egg led to a vivid dialogue where all nine jury members had something to feel and say about the egg. «It is naive. It looks like a comic. It is a very conceptual choice. It is really fooling us all. It is quite genius. It is so childish.» «It gives room for interpretation. It is so strange. Is it a positive or negative message?» «An egg is also hope. There are various ways of looking at it.» «People will not understand it but they will start speaking about it. Why the fuck is an egg at the school?» «We are a surprise egg. You never know what comes out of it.»
