The workshop will explore the intersection of technology and visual self-expression. In this workshop, attendees will learn how to use popular facetuning apps and understand their impact on self-perception. The basics of custom robotics will be introduced, and attendees will have the opportunity to learn how to program a simple drawing robot to alter portraits.

Attendees will also gain methods for analyzing and critiquing the beauty standards promoted by social media algorithms. The workshop will include group discussions on the ethical implications of digital self-manipulation and provide with critical frameworks for understanding the complex relationship between technology and self-perception. It will address crucial questions facing our digital society: How do we maintain individuality in an age of algorithmic homogenization? What are the ethical considerations of AI-driven beauty standards? How can we harness technology to amplify rather than suppress diverse forms of self-expression? By the end of this hands-on workshop, attendees will have challenged their perceptions and leave inspired with new ways of thinking about identity in the digital age.

Biography

Gretchen Andrew (born in Los Angeles, 1988) hacks systems of power with art, code and glitter. She trained in London with the artist Billy Childish from 2012-2017. In 2018 the V&A Museum released her book Search Engine Art. Starting in 2019 she became known for her vision boards and associated performative internet manipulations of art world institutions of Frieze Los Angeles, The Whitney Biennial, The Turner Prize, and The Cover of Artforum. She is currently the artist in residence at the National Gallery X London.
Originally conceived as an experiment (Can the internet make me into an artist?) Gretchen left Silicon Valley in 2012. Since then, a unique merger of traditional mediums and strategic information technology has led her name and visual “vision board” aesthetic to be one of the most recognizable amongst her generation of artists.
