SPATIAL AFFAIRS. Extended Reality Experiences will showcase cutting-edge prototypes developed during an innovative residency program. The project aims to foster immersive, collective experiences, using the Extended Reality (XR) platform AIRE developed by iart and real-time interactions.
In collaboration with three international cultural institutions—HEK (House of Electronic Arts) in Basel, MAP (Museum of Art & Photography) in Bangalore, and Tabakalera in San Sebastián— three selected artists have developed new XR-based projects over six-week residencies in summer 2024. With the support of the technology partners iart and TEKNIKER, as well as the research partner metaLAB (at) Basel, the residency artists worked on site-specific installations that explore the boundaries between physical and digital spaces.
The four works-in-progress shown at Mesh are the following:
• Géraldine Honauer (Basel) explores environmental data through AR, allowing users to engage with live air pollution data via body-tracking technology.
• Ìfẹ́olúwa Ọ̀ṣúnkọ̀yà (Lagos) creates a VR multiplayer experience where performers embody quantum bits, forming dynamic circuits through collaborative performance.
• Juan Ferrer & Natalia Cabrera (Brooklyn/Barcelona) introduce Symbiotica Vol. 2, an interactive XR installation where players build symbiotic digital ecosystems in real-time through choreographed interaction.
• Beat Brogle (Zwei) Zwei’ is a media art project that is staged as a kind of laboratory experiment. The mesh version of ‘Zwei’ brings the experience into mixed reality, where the work can be experienced in a new environment and dimension.
This two-year initiative is a Synergies project supported by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia.
