BODY MACHINE (MERIDIANS)

der TANK

Free entrance

Suitable for all guests

Supported by the Schaulager Foundation, Chinese-Canadian artist and researcher Sougwen Chung will be showing two different works – BODY MACHINE (MERIDIANS) and ECOLOGIES OF BECOMING-WITH – at der TANK, which will open on October 17th through an intimate performance taking place at 18:00.

BODY MACHINE (MERIDIANS) is a series of biomimetic robotic speculations sculpted in air. These works are created using custom training models and spatial technologies, where gestural lines are suspended and scale is a permeable medium. The artist captures these lines using gestural VR and motion capture, which are then reimagined as 'Machine Meridians.' This Meridian data represents the body as a generative system.

This data serves as the foundation for a groundbreaking new spatial dataset, facilitating robotic collaboration and advancing the next generation of D.O.U.G. (Drawing Operations Unit Generations), an ongoing project exploring the future of the human hand.

Biography

Sougwen 愫君 Chung is an artist and researcher considered a pioneer in human-machine collaboration – exploring the mark-made-by-hand and the mark-made-by-machine as an approach to understanding systems. Their work is part of the Victoria and Albert Museum’s permanent collection. In 2024, TIME named Chung one of the 100 Most Influential People in AI.
